What to Expect in Therapy

lakeCounseling is a collaborative experience where both the therapist and client work together to determine what the presenting problems are, what the goals are, and ultimately the areas that are most in need of relief. I find that if the therapy experience is not collaborative in the beginning, it can be difficult for people to achieve their goals. You are the expert on your life.  My role and my hope is to walk alongside and guide you as you do the necessary work to free yourself from the issues
that hinder you from living the life you want.

Getting Started

People seek out therapy for differing reasons. The initial 15-minute consultation over the phone is the most helpful way to determine whether your needs and what I offer would be a good fit.  After the phone consultation, we’ll set up an initial session where you come in to discuss your history, goals, and what therapy might look like going forward. In that first session we can identify areas where therapy would be helpful and also begin to formulate a plan for how we would address those issues.

Tailored to Each Person

Because therapy is tailored to each unique person that comes in, the duration of time spent in therapy also varies widely. For some, therapy might only be a few sessions.  For others, it is more helpful to see it as a longer term approach to deal with the chronic trauma, anxiety or other symptoms that are present. It is important, especially in the beginning, that people feel that therapy is a safe space to discuss their hopes, fears, and expectations that come from seeking professional care.
